Election Day Yoga

Happy Tuesday!

Sooooo, unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know it’s Election Day.

I already voted (absentee, baby!), and I’m one of those people who LOVES voting. I think it goes back to my long-standing obsession with American history, but I’m all about Election Day. I think it’s one of those awesome things that everyone should participate in and appreciate the ability to do. Mind you I also am jazzed about the opportunity to one day have jury duty as another part of my civic duty…. weird? Okay, maybe.

Anyways, around the D.C. area people basically won’t shut up about the election (surprise, surprise), from the news to free/reduced price meals for anyone wearing an “I voted” sticker to fancy new cocktails at local bars all day while the votes are counted. Talk about playing into a stereotype, D.C.

But there’s also another movement quietly happening today: election day yoga!

I’m ALL about democracy and feeling strongly about your candidate/views, but the idea of bringing people together with yoga? Awesome.

Sponsored by Lululemon (LOVE), a bunch of studios around the district are offering free classes all day today to celebrate Election Day, in the hopes of uniting people instead of dragging them apart based on politics. I mean, we all love some downward dog just about as much as we love Lincoln and the right to vote, now don’t we?

AND a free yoga class. Let’s not forget that part.

My friend Monica and I plan on hitting up Epic Yoga, a new-to-me studio tonight, and I cannot wait! From its website, it looks like a beautiful, tranquil space and they even lend out yoga mats for free. This all almost makes up for the fact that I missed out on getting an “I voted” sticker since I voted absentee this year (they should really consider mailing those babies).

I haven’t been to yoga class in AGES, and my body is aching for something other than cardio. I’ve been taking a couple of weeks off from running since my knee has been painful since my race. It’s finally feeling better from doing incline walking on the treadmill and biking, but I think yoga is the real answer.

So now what are you waiting for? Go get your stinkin’ “I voted” sticker… and then a large gingerbread latte because obviously you earned it. Amurrrica. 😉

Are you doing anything fun for Election Day?
