Race Recap – Fit Foodie Run San Diego

Guyssssssssss. I had a blast at the Fit Foodie Run on Saturday! I hope a lot of you attended, because I definitely had a great time and feel so lucky to have been a part of the fun.

As you know, I was lucky enough to be named an ambassador for the race this year, and so as a result, I knew a lot about the amazing events the weekend held and the sponsors that would be there in the finishers village.

…..But I was still blown away.

A couple of my good girlfriends/favorite SD runners joined me for the 5K this year, and we had so much fun soaking up the sights and sampling the goodies at the finish line (obviously the best part). I’ve mentioned it before, but the area the race was held (the Embarcadero along the San Diego Harbor) is one of my very favorite places to run in the universe, and definitely in San Diego, so that made being there extra special. thumb_IMG_0774_1024

For the race itself, it was a bit congested at the start because of the narrow path in the embarcadero (it opened up about half a mile in as we got to the main strand of the harbor), and I made the rookie mistake of setting off after my friend Jen, who’s a speed demon (no joke – she’s amazing and came in third in her age group at this 5K). I’m like a 8:45/9 minute/mile, so that wasn’t the smartest because I couldn’t sustain it despite best efforts. I have a goal of working on my speed, but it’s one I haven’t voiced too often because it sorta scares me…. but more on that another time.

I’ve never been to a race – 5K, 10K, half marathon, whatever – with such a robust and lively finishers’ area. Oh my goodness – the place was jam-packed! All the brands there were friendly and excited to be a part of the event, and had healthy treats and other goodies on hand to share with everyone. It was incredible. We almost couldn’t believe our eyes and didn’t even go for breakfast after the 5K – we just ate all the samples in the finishers’ village!

San Diego, I love you to pieces.

I finished with an official time of 25 minutes and something seconds, although the course was actually about .05 miles short…. so I ran past the finish line to make up for it. Type A for the win.  😉

I spent the rest of the weekend hanging out with friends and exploring Normal Heights/Kensington areas, which I didn’t spend too much time in when i was living there unfortunately. It’s adorable!

A tremendous thank you to the Fit Foodie Run, as well as Cooking Light and Health magazines for letting me participate in this great race! It was such a fun experience and a wonderful weekend overall.

Being a Fit Foodie 5K Ambassador

Happy Thursday from wannabe Florida. 😉 Jokes.The never-ending swampy summer struggle is real here in southern California. It’s almost impossible to get your basic white girl on when the weather makes scarves and boots and pumpkin lattes miserable.

You may have already noticed the notes on my Instagram profile, but I’m now an ambassador for the Fit Foodie 5K Race Weekend in San Diego! I’m beyond excited, can I just tell you that? The race series is hosted by Cooking Light and Health, aka two of my very favorite magazines. It may sound silly to some, but I’m honored to have my name anywhere close to those publications. And as we all know, I will most definitely run for food.

(…that was my pre-run dinner before my first half…. I was proving the pancake was as big as my face. Success.)

The San Diego race is on Saturday, November 7. That’s 3.1 miles through my very favorite city to run in, and in my favorite spot in said city to run (the Embarcadero, on the water). I haven’t run in SD since my glorious half marathon in March – aka my favorite half marathon thus far, besides the first one – and I’m stoked to get back down there.

It’s no secret that I love SD, so any excuse to go down and visit my favorite people in town is one I’ll take. But an excuse that comes filled with delicious snacks and wine and tied with a big running bow? Um, yes. Yes, please.

This year, the race’s theme is “Calories Burned. Calories Earned,” and a percent of funds from the race are going toward the American Diabetes Association. I actually have a personal rule where I’ll only run a 5K race (and pay a registration fee) if the race either somehow benefits my community in some way (like is connected to a nonprofit I believe is) or looks like it’ll be super amazing incredible sauce. Friday Things

I have some random biz to share with you guys because… you know. It’s pretty much the weekend. What else are we all doing?

  1. I used a flatiron (hair straightener) to iron my romper this morning. Think about that entire sentence……I’m an adult?
  2. I bought new running shoes this week and broke away from my beloved hot pink Nikes; I’ve been wearing the LunarGlide6 style for a year and have LOVED them, but they’re actually a teensy bit too narrow for my feet (blisters are fun). It’s fine – these new guys are bright mint.
  3. Pumpkin is officially back in my life…….. pumpkin waffles, pumpkin oatmeal. Just a PSA for you.
  4. OC friends, have you tried Grit Cycle yet? I’ve totally drunk the kool-aide. Pssst – went yesterday and heard this song and this song and am now obsessssssssssssssed.
  5. Scandal’s back.  YAS.
  6. Tomorrow I’m going to the Newport Beach Food and Wine Fest! Any OC folks wanna join?! The ticket price is a little scary, but it’s all inclusive (to my knowledge) and I have a sweet discount for $50 off for ya — MEDIA50

Running to Run

MONDAY.

IMG_8531I spent the morning rowing a million meters at Crossfit, which, newsflash, is not the most fun for miniature people like yours truly. Great Monday activity though, yeah? 😉

Let’s talking racing plans, shall we? Last month I’d mentioned that I might not be able to run the Healdsburg Half after all because of work…. well, since then a few things have happened, including some fun news: I was offered a new, new job (!!), which means work is no longer an obstacle. But since I’d been assuming I couldn’t run Healdsburg because of the old new job, I never booked any of my travel plans, and I ended up getting sick, which threw off my training a teensy bit.. so if you’re keeping track, that means no Healdsburg Half Marathon in two weeks. I was still sorta training though (doing speed intervals, running at least three times a week with a long run on the weekends), but I didn’t feel like I was training as well I wanted to be or could be, especially since I had set a super secret goal of hitting 2 hours or sub.

Not so secret anymore… oops.

Anyways, with Healdsburg being off the table, I became fixated on the idea of still doing a half in the next month or so, and preferably one in the nearby area so I wouldn’t have to spend a fortune on plane tickets considering I’m already eating the registration cost of Healdsburg (they don’t defer or refund). I was obsessed with finding one that would fit my schedule and still be doable, aka not set me up for an injury or cause me to travel out of southern California. That left me with the Long Beach Half Marathon (which I vowed NEVER AGAIN after last year – recap here), the Silver Strand Half (which seemed pretty and flat, but boring), or the Los Angeles Rock and Roll on October 25.

I started leaning pretty heavily toward doing the RnR half, which meant I technically needed to run 10 miles this past weekend.

And then I had a come to Jesus moment.

I felt like I was forcing myself to do a half marathon ASAP even though, truth be told, my heart wasn’t really into it. I’ve been loving all my long runs, but I’ve been struggling to keep running as my priority during the week over Crossfit and Pure Barre. Note to self: running hard is really difficult after a day of a million squats. It was like I just felt like I was supposed to do a fall half marathon…. because I set up imaginary expectations for myself that aren’t necessarily important or needed. I sometimes forget they can be modified or shifted.

Plus, if I really wanted to hit my goal and wasn’t just trying to do a fun run, then I probably shouldn’t be going into a half feeling like I wasn’t putting my all into training. What’s the point of that?

I also realized – as silly as this sounds – that hey, if I like doing my long training runs, I can STILL do them. They don’t have to be reserved for only “training” periods of my life. (P.s. I consider a “long” run anything seven miles or over… aka any run that requires me to have a snack before I hit the pavement.)

I gave myself permission to just enjoy running for the sake of running again. Running because I can. And running long because I want to… just because.

Saturday I ran eight miles and it was glorious. I got lost in the music and the fog billowing over Back Bay, and remembered why I love to run. Why I always wanted to be a runner and am so grateful to have found my feet back in college.

That’s what running IS, you know? It’s not just races or paces or medals. It’s about always trying to be better than before, moving forward, and appreciating how strong you are – even when you’re unsure. Running, my dears, is the best convincer you need, and a testament to the human spirit. Because even if you’re shuffling and you’re too tired to squeak out more than half a mile… you’re moving and you’re alive and you can be whoever you want to be.

Or at least that’s what it is to me.

Moral of the story – I’m officially running zero half marathons this fall, and I’m fine with it. I want my next race to excite me and be something I’m looking forward to, and already have a few ideas for winter/spring (Carlsbad Half in January 2016, anyone??) and some potenial summer races for my wish list.

And that’s that. Maybe I should get some new running shoes in the meantime….

Healdsburg Half Training Begins (+ MCM10K Team Info!)

Hi friends! Happy Monday. 🙂

Today happens to be week one of training for my next race – the Healdsburg Half Marathon! It’s October 11th up in wine country (aka northern California). I’m doing basically the same training plan as when I ran the San Diego half in March, except I’ll be doing Crossfit workouts 2-3 times a week instead of body pump.  More on that Crossfit biz soon….

Of all the available half marathons in fall that I could have signed up, this one may seem sort of random. I chose it mainly because it reminded me a lot of my first half back in 2013, also in wine country (in nearby Santa Rosa), which had such a warm, community feel since it was smaller. And wine, duh.  Large races are exciting, but I almost think that the smaller town halfs are more fun since spectators tend to get super excited and the whole town’s involved.

And that reminds me- the sweet folks over at the Organization for Autism Research (OAR) recently reached out to let me know about their involvement in the Marine Corps Marathon 10K, which is also this fall (October 25th). OAR funds autism research, educates teachers of students with autism, provides support to families, offers scholarships, and more. I’m passionate about community outreach and supporting nonprofits (both personally and professionally), so of course I was more than happy to share their info with you guys.

OAR is forming a charity team right now, and looking for runners to sign up! If you’re on the hunt for a fun 10K race for the fall, I highly suggest this one. The MCM 10K was actually my VERY first race ever (here’s the recap from 2012), and holds a special place in my heart.

The crowds are great (MORE COW BELL) and it winds through great areas in D.C. that make the miles fly by. Plus a Marine will place your medal on you when you cross the finish line, which is pretty rad. The only thing sort of stinky is the massive hill in the last tenth (?) of a mile or so, but it’s sort of a rite of passage for all D.C. runners.

Some facts about Autism, via OAR:

  • 1 in 68 children in the US are diagnosed with Autism or Asperger’s Syndrome – that’s more children than are affected by diabetes, AIDS, cancer, cerebral palsy, cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy and Down syndrome combined
  • There is still no cure for autism
  • OAR is the only autism organization that focuses solely on applied research

Personally, I’ve never run a race as part of a charity team, but I would really love to. Ya’ll know I use the SD half to raise money for the Cooley’s Anemia Foundation, and although that was on my own, it felt really good to feel like I was running for someone other than myself and a medal, you know? And let’s be real – training for a race is overall excellent motivation for getting into the swing of running (or back in, if you’ve taken a  break).

As part of OAR’s team, you’ll be provided with:

  • A specially designed singlet
  • Food and drink before and after the race
  • An exciting race-day team environment
  • A runner’s recognition dinner

Heck, I wish I could come join!

Anyways, I went to Crossfit this morning, and am trying to figure out how sore legs + training runs (and weekend long runs!) are going to mix from week to week… we shall see! It’ll be an experiment. 😉
